“Where can I go to get away from your Spirit? Where can I run from you? If I go up to the heavens, you are there. If I lie down in the grave, you are there. If I rise with the sun in the east and settle in the west beyond the sea, even there you would guide me. With your right hand you would hold me.”
(Psalms 139:7-10)(Psalms 139:7-10)
Try to hide from God! Go ahead give it your best shot!
Jonah tried.
Jonah discovered you can’t run from God.
Gary Piper tried for nearly 20 years.
Gary Piper discovered what Jonah tried to tell him – you can’t run away from yourself or God!
Ashamed of all those “dirty little white sins”? Forget about running away save yourself some time and instead run toward God you’ll save yourself a whole lot of heartaches as well.
“I could say, ‘The darkness will hide me. Let the light around me turn into night.’ But even the darkness is not dark to you. The night is as light as the day; darkness and light are the same to you.” (Psalms 139:11-12)
I am afraid of the dark. I remember as a small boy of seeing a very scary movie that left me with nightmares for several days. I no longer have the nightmares but my fear of the dark lingers.
While I am still afraid of the dark my fear no longer has the same power over me it once did. Know why?
Yup! Your right! I finally stopped running from God. I ran toward him and suddenly I found myself laughing my fear of the dark in the face!
“Later, Jesus talked to the people again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. The person who follows me will never live in darkness but will have the light that gives life.’” (John 8:12)
“You made my whole being; you formed me in my mother’s body. I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way. What you have done is wonderful. I know this very well. You saw my bones being formed as I took shape in my mother’s body. When I was put together there, you saw my body as it was formed. All the days planned for me were written in your book before I was one day old.” (Psalms 139:13-16)
When you walk in the Light of Jesus, when the Light of God illuminates the dark corridors of your life you begin the see yourself in a different light. You begin to see yourself at center stage with a huge brighter and bright spot light lighting your every move. (Even the moves you don’t want others to see.)
No longer are you just an ordinary human being about billions – you discover you are God’s greatest miracle. You discover that among all the billions of people on the earth you are unique – a one of a kind person created in the image and likeness of God.
While many people debate the ins and outs, the this’ and that’s of predestination there is one thing for sure God has a plan for your life and because God is without beginning or end his plan for your life has been in place for a very, very, very long time. And because God is more than wonderful you are too.
It is only when you walk in the Light of Jesus does your life and God’s life make any sense. “Walk in the Light and you will see!”
“God, your thoughts are precious to me. They are so many! If I could count them, they would be more than all the grains of sand. When I wake up, I am still with you.” (Psalms 139:17-18)
God is wonderful beyond wonderful!
God’s thoughts are wonderful beyond wonderful!
The Prophet Isaiah quoting God wrote, “Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9 NCV)
God’s thoughts are so wonderful that we need the Holy Spirit to help us understand them. But even though the Holy Spirit becomes the voice of God telling us of God’s high and lofty thoughts our understanding of them will still be limited.
However, there is a law that not only applies to natural world but the world spiritual world as well. “The closer to the source of power the more power can be transferred.” The planet Mercury absorbs more of the suns power than does the planet Earth. Likewise the intimate you are with Jesus the more intimate you will be with the God.
The Apostle Paul puts it this way. “But God has shown us these things through the Spirit. The Spirit searches out all things, even the deep secrets of God. Who knows the thoughts that another person has? Only a person’s spirit that lives within him knows his thoughts. It is the same with God. No one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we did not receive the spirit of the world, but we received the Spirit that is from God so that we can know all that God has given us.” (1st Corinthians 2:10-12)
Perhaps the three most important words used by Paul are these “but we received” which means that we already have the capability of knowing God’s thoughts (to the extent we need to understand them) we only need to increase our capacity to do so.
“God, I wish you would kill the wicked! Get away from me, you murderers! They say evil things about you. Your enemies use your name thoughtlessly. Lord, I hate those who hate you; I hate those who rise up against you. I feel only hate for them; they are my enemies.” (Psalms 139:19-22)
There are times when it seems right to get even with those who dishonor God and us. There are times when we want God to be our sword however the Apostle Paul sets the record straight for us.
“Wish good for those who harm you; wish them well and do not curse them. Be happy with those who are happy, and be sad with those who are sad. Live in peace with each other. Do not be proud, but make friends with those who seem unimportant. Do not think how smart you are. If someone does wrong to you, do not pay him back by doing wrong to him. Try to do what everyone thinks is right. Do your best to live in peace with everyone. My friends, do not try to punish others when they wrong you, but wait for God to punish them with his anger. It is written: “I will punish those who do wrong; I will repay them says the Lord. But you should do this: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. Doing this will be like pouring burning coals on his head.” (Proverbs 25:21-22) Do not let evil defeat you, but defeat evil by doing good.” (Romans 12:14-21)
God’s word may be a doubled edged sword but God is God is God!
“God, examine me and know my heart; test me and know my nervous thoughts. See if there is any bad thing in me. Lead me on the road to everlasting life.” (Psalms 139:23-24)
Have you ever seen the picture where Jesus is standing at a closed door and appears to be knocking on it? The picture is based on the following scripture: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and eat with you, and you will eat with me.” (Revelation 3:20)
Verses 23 and 24 of Psalms 139 are no more than walking to the door unlocking it and saying to Jesus, “Lord, I am hungry please come in so we can dine together.”
I thought I just heard your spirit growling! Unlocked your door yet?
