Introduction:

Have you ever stopped to think about what hymns really are?  Oh, sure they’re religious songs that sing about Jesus, God, the Holy Spirit, the church, salvation, faith, love, heaven, and many more related topics.  But hymns are more than that they are stories, stories told by the writer’s of how God has touched their lives.  Hymns are legacies left behind to assist us as we feel our way along the dusty road of life to provide us with reassurance that the writer’s story can be ours.

For me a hymnal is in many ways similar to the Old Testament Book of Psalms.  Often we sing the words that make up the hymn without really thinking about how the inspiration behind the words can have a positive impact upon our lives.  In my own life there have been times when I not sung a hymn because I found myself unable to follow through on what I was telling the Lord.  It’s amazing to me how the spirit in which a hymn as been written many years ago can still come alive in me.

My intention is to take some of hymns that have impacted my life and explore why they have become pivotal experiences when I (attempt) to sing them.  It is my prayerful hope that as you read of how they impact my life they will have an impact upon your life as well and in the future when you find yourself singing them they will be more than just a hymn.

We are on a journey a rough and tumble gotta keep moving ahead journey.

Some see life as a journey from birth to death, from life to eternity.

Some see life as a journey through hell.

Some see life as a time to climb a social ladder and gain riches.

Some see life as a burden to be endured, as a series of pleasantries.

In whatever way you see life of this you can be certain, the journey began with Jesus Christ and it will one day end with God.

Many see death as the final journey yet death isn’t a journey – death is only a brief pause on the final journey. In case you are wondering what the final journey is the gospel of John explains it this way. “Thomas said, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus replied, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you have known me, you will know my Father too. And from now on you do know him and have seen him.’” (John 14:5 – 14:7 NET Bible)

Life is our allotted time to prepare ourselves to meet God and without Jesus that cannot happen. The story you are about to read is a fictional account of two people making preparations to meet God. One gave their life to Jesus yet had not begun the final journey. The other one is still searching for the final journey.
